Silk Island, which is famous for traditional Cambodian silk-making techniques, is a 30-minute boat ride from Phnom Penh. It is a pleasant day trip from the city.
On the island, you can walk from house to house, looking at how local artisans weave silk cloth under their homes to make clothes, purses, scarves and other items.
You can observe the entire silk-making process – from raising silkworms to weaving silk cloth.
It takes 48 days for silkworms to produce silk, and after the first generation of worms die, the next generation continues the work.
Afterwards, the finished product is transported to Central Market and Russian Market in Phnom Penh, but some is also kept to sell to tourists who visit Silk Island.
